Franklin County’s wrestling team cruised into the championship match of the Capital City Duals.

Then the Flyers ran into Spring Valley High out of West Virginia.

Spring Valley edged FCHS 34-30 in the championship match of the tournament, which took place at Franklin County.

“It was a good day up to finals,” FCHS coach Zac Donnelly said. “We pretty handily beat teams all the way through up to the finals.”

The Flyers won four matches to reach the championship, beating Louisville Holy Cross 66-15, Western 66-12, Bryan Station 84-0, and Walton-Verona 72-12.

The 16 teams in the tournament, which included Western Hills, were placed in four-team pools, and there were three more rounds to the tournament after pool play concluded.

Most of the matches between FCHS and Spring Valley in the championship were close, something that didn’t surprise Donnelly.
“They’re a good team,” he said. “They have six guys returning who were state qualifiers last year. They’re a good team, but I thought we had some young guys, a couple of freshmen, I don’t know if they thought it was a big match, but they didn’t seem to wrestle the same as they had earlier.

“Overall it was a good day,” Donnelly added. “We just couldn’t pull out the win. If one match had gone the other way, if we’d gotten another pin or won one more match we could have won the championship match. I’m pleased with the day overall.”

FCHS had four wrestlers go undefeated on the day – Josh Bruning at 160 pounds, Jeremy Gardner at 171, Tevon Clay at 125, and Josh Lopez at 130.

“We have a full team,” Donnelly said, “and we have freshmen stepping up. We had some people in different weight classes today. I think we’ll be stronger at the Super Duals. We have a couple guys out, with injuries and what not, and they’ll be back for that.”

Western Hills had two wrestlers who finished the tournament undefeated – Ken Holbrook at 215 pounds and Christian Wilkins in the heavyweight class.

The Wolverines finished fourth in their pool, and they won their final match of the day against Shawnee, 42-30.

“I honestly thought we could come out second (in our pool),” WHHS coach Adam Bowser said. “We had three kids out – one senior, Mark Davis who’s a team captain, was on a Beta Club trip, and a couple others are sick.

“We actually did well as young as we are,” he added. “They learned a lot, and they improved from last week. That’s all we’re asking for right now.”

The Wolverines had 14 wrestlers at Saturday’s tournament.

“Ninety-five percent of our kids were on the football team,” Bowser said, “and since the football team had such a good season they haven’t been out that long.

“They’ve been practicing for four weeks, and for some of them this is the first time they’ve been out for the team,” he added. “It’s a long season, and they’ll do a lot of learning.”

Both FCHS and WHHS wrestle again in the Region 7 Super Duals at Montgomery County Dec. 21-22.
