A couple of things went wrong for Frankfort High’s girls basketball team Friday night.
The Lady Panthers suffered a scoring drought in the third quarter, and Bardstown hit its free throws down the stretch to beat FHS 47-34 at F.D. Wilkinson Gym.
When Malaka Frank hit a layup with three seconds to go in the first half, it cut Bardstown’s lead to six points, 20-14, at halftime.
But when the second half started, the Lady Tigers scored the first six points and FHS didn’t score until Shauntae Brown’s layup with 27 seconds to go in the third quarter.
By the end of the quarter Bardstown (5-1) led 28-16, but Frankfort stayed within striking distance with 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions from Shanae Brown, Margeau Zeigler and Shauntae Brown.
“The good thing is the girls didn’t give up,” FHS coach Jody Hellard said. “Down the stretch they executed and ran the stuff we wanted. We started hitting our shots, and we fouled them in the fourth quarter trying to make up ground.
“They went 15-for-18 from the line in the fourth quarter,” he added. “That’s a good team at finishing down the stretch to preserve the win.”
Bardstown never trailed in the game. The Lady Tigers scored the first five points, only to see FHS tie the game on two layups and a free throw by Shauntae Brown.
BHS closed out the first quarter with five straight points for a 10-5 lead. After Shauntae Brown hit four straight free throws to pull Frankfort within a point at 10-9, Bardstown reeled off six straight points for a 20-11 lead.
FHS ended the first half with a free throw by Abby Green and Frank’s layup.
Shauntae Brown led all scorers with 23 points.
“She did a good job,” Hellard said. “She was able to get to the basket, and she made her free throws. Everybody was crashing the boards tonight. I’m extremely proud of them.”
Bardstown had two players in double figures, led by Daizah Kimberland with 14 points. Rhianaa Hofstraat chipped in 10 points.
“They out-sized us,” Hellard said. “They’re almost as quick as us and twice as big as us.
“Every single player on our team played as hard as they can play,” he added. “They gave it everything they’ve got.”
FHS picked up its second win of the season Saturday, beating Deming 47-27 in the Forcht Bank/Dry Ridge Toyota Holiday Classic at Grant County.
The Lady Panthers (2-5) continue tournament play Monday, taking on Beechwood at 10:30 a.m. at Grant County.
