Fire heavily damaged a Steele Street home early today, but there were no injuries. Firefighters got a call reporting heavy smoke in the Steele Street area around 4 a.m., Frankfort Fire Department’s Public Information Officer Dan Shouse said. Fire engines arrived on the scene at 320 Steele St. in minutes, and firefighters found no one in the residence, Shouse said. “We’re not really sure if the place was being occupied full-time,” he said. According to Shouse, the old home had been converted into multiple apartments. The identity of the property owner or an apartment resident was not immediately available. Firefighters entered the building through the front door, but couldn’t get to the second floor because the stairway had burned and collapsed. They had to use ladders from the outside to access the upper floor. The building suffered major smoke damage, Shouse said, but responding crews extinguished the flames before the building was further damaged. Fire officials are investigating a cause. Shouse said it likely started around the stairway. They ruled out gas as a possible cause because it’d been shut off. Around 20 firefighters responded, with some coming in on overtime. “We had to call in some overtime because we’re short staffed,” Shouse said. Shouse says the fire shouldn’t affect Frankfort High School, and Steele Street was open around 6:15 a.m.
