The LeMoyne-Owen men’s basketball team had its inside-out game clicking, and the Magicians rode that to a 79-68 win over Kentucky State Thursday night at the Exum Center.

“Early in the second half they hit three or four 3-pointers,” KSU coach Clarence Moore said. “That gave them momentum and it took momentum away from us.

“From that point their guys really played well.”

It was KSU (4-13, 4-12 SIAC) that played well early, going on an 11-2 run in the first half to take a 25-13 lead.

That came with 8:31 left in the half, and by the time halftime arrived the Magicians (12-8, 11-7 SIAC) led 32-30.

K-State’s last lead came on a 3-pointer by Jarrod Gay to open the second half. That put the Thorobreds ahead 33-32, but LeMoyne-Owen battled back.

Of the Magicians’ first seven shots of the second half four were 3-pointers. That put LOC up 50-40 with 13:40 remaining, and two minutes later the lead had grown to 53-40.

KSU scored the game’s next nine points with a 3-pointer by Gay, a three-point play and a layup by Tony Johnson and a free throw by Parysh Munroe.

That pulled the Thorobreds within four points at 53-49, but that’s as close as they would get.

“We cut the lead to four,” Moore said, “but we had some turnovers late in the game and they were able to convert a couple of them.”

The Magicians went inside and on most possessions either scored on layups or free throws. In the final 51 seconds of the game, after KSU had gotten the lead down to six points at 70-64, LeMoyne-Owen went 5-for-6 from the foul line.

“We were getting beat off the dribble and didn’t get in front of people,” Moore said. “We were getting caught out of position and fouled them, and they went to the free throw line.”

LeMoyne-Owen was led by LaDarius Johnson, who nearly recorded a triple-double. He finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Maurice Mickens had a game-high 20 points.

The Magicians shot 53.6 percent in the second half after hitting just 33.3 percent of their shots in the first half.

Gay went 5-for-10 on 3-pointers and led KSU with a game-high 23 points. Munroe had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Johnson chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
