The Thorobrettes maintained their stranglehold on second place in the SIAC by holding the Lady Bears to three points in the five-minute overtime period after regulation ended in a 61-61 tie.

Stephanie Harper scored four points in the overtime period and 22 in the game after playing a scoreless three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

Miles (12-9, 9-7) shot over 50 percent from the field in both halves but connected on just 1-of-7 shots in the extra period.

Jessica Vaughn, who scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, knotted the game at the end of regulation with two free throws to send it into overtime.

The two teams were tied at halftime with 31 points apiece, but Miles opened up a 61-54 lead on a jumper by Brandy Gillespie with four minutes to play.

Back-to-back layups from Harper and a free throw from Kiera Nelson set up Vaughn’s game-tying opportunity as Kentucky State forced three turnovers and held the Lady Bears scoreless in the final 4:15.

Shana McCombs joined Harper and Vaughn in double figures with 13 and also contributed a game-high five assists.

Cytonia Jones led the Lady Bears with 13 points, while Sammeika Thomas added 11 points and seven rebounds.

K-State (13-6, 13-3) opened the game with a 20-9 advantage through the first nine minutes of play, but Miles went on a 17-6 run to tie the game 26-26 with 2:39 left in the first half.
