One team made plays when it mattered most. The other didn’t.
That’s how Western Hills coach Enoch Welch summed up the Wolverines’ 79-63 loss Saturday night against Danville at Lapsley Cardwell Gym.
The Wolverines hung with the Admirals (9-11) through three quarters before falling apart late in the game.
“That’s big-time basketball,” Welch said. “You’ve got to make plays in the clutch.”
Western Hills (9-12) narrowly trailed the Ads for much of the game until the fourth quarter where the Wolverines were outscored 24-12.
The score was 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and 35-33 at halftime. Entering the final frame, Danville led 55-51.
J.T. Riddle led the Wolverines with 28 points and Dylan Curry added 18. Danville’s Jacody Harris led all scorers with 30 points, including five 3-pointers.
“He’s quick on quick,” Welch said of Harris. “We couldn’t stay in front of him.
“J.T. and Dylan played solid games tonight, but we just didn’t play good defense.”
Welch said he was hoping his team could build off its 86-73 win earlier in the week at Spencer County. Instead WHHS, which has lost 10 of its last 12 games, is back to square one.
The Wolverines next play at Lexington Christian Tuesday.
“We didn’t bring the effort tonight,” he said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, but that’s no excuse for not playing good basketball.”
