Franklin County Road Superintendent Randy Thompson said his 12-member snow removal crew went to work about 2:45 a.m. today, and  took about five hours to finish its routes.

“We got about 3 inches, and when they completed their routes, the roads were already covered up again,” said Thompson, about 8:30 a.m. “But it’s warming up and has quit snowing, so I think the roads are going to clean up all right.”

He said he didn’t hear of any wrecks during the night.

County and city schools are closed today.

City Street Superintendent Allen Burriss said the snow started about 11:30 p.m. Monday, and his 19-member road crew worked all night.

“We put down salt and then pushed and plowed all night,” Burriss said.

The Frankfort forecast for today is light snow occasionally mixed with rain with an additional snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The highs should be in the mid-30s.

Tonight, snow showers are likely with areas of blowing and drifting snow. A 1-inch accumulation is predicted and the temperature should drop to around 15.

Statewide, a winter storm warning is in effect for most of the state, and forecasters predicted higher snow accumulations later in the day.

Many roads across the state were snow covered and slick, police said.

Numerous school districts canceled classes Tuesday as the snow started piling up.

Snowplows working overnight focused on the major routes.

Interstates in Louisville were in “pretty good shape,” but the snow fell so fast that stretches that had been cleared were being covered with another layer, said Andrea S. Clifford, a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 5 spokeswoman.

More than 3 inches of snow had fallen by 7 a.m. in Louisville with forecasters predicting another 1 to 3 inches later in the day.

I think the state, county, and city road crews have all done an excellent job this season clearing our roads. Kudos to all of you! Keep up the good work!

The city crew was on the ball early this morning, they scraped my street no less than three times after I went to bed. They did wake me up doing it though.LOL Usually my street isn't cleaned anywhere near that early. I wasn't looking forward to going down Swigert Ave. at all this morning, but thanks to a great job by the city last night my trip this morning wasn't nuckle bearing at all...GREAT JOB!!

I've heard the phrases: "Yes, but it is a wet snow." "Yes, but it is a dry snow." Who cares?! I am sick of cold weather and snow! Come on spring and do your thing!
