CCU completed an undefeated season with a come-from-behind victory over Farm Bureau Insurance in the Minor League softball tournament championship Wednesday at Lakeview Park.
Farm Bureau won the losers bracket final Tuesday and took a 3-0 lead over CCU Wednesday with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Lexi Abbott led off the third with a single and scored on a double by Emily Jordan. Chandler Kelly followed with a double to score Jordan and came home with the third run of the inning, putting Farm Bureau up 3-0.
CCU tied the game in the bottom of the third. Casey Anglin doubled to lead off the inning, and Taylor Redmon was hit by a pitch.
A base hit by Kayla Hortenbury scored Anglin, and Redmon and Hortenbury scored on a triple by Danielle Hockensmith to tie the game at 3-3.
The winning run came in the fifth inning. Payton Sands and Ashleigh Caudell reached base when they were hit by pitches. Katelyn Slone hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Sands out at third, and Tammra Means grounded out to first for the second out as both runners advanced.
A groundout by Olivia Hagg brought home Caudell with the winning run.
Hortenbury pitched a complete game for CCU and struck out 17 batters. She also hit two singles. Hockensmith hit a triple, Anglin doubled, and Redmon, Slone and Hagg each had a base hit.
Farm Bureau’s hits were a double and single by Jordan and doubles by Kelly and McKenzie Burns.
Mariah Butler and Jordan pitched for Farm Bureau and had eight strikeouts.
