The Frankfort All-Stars stayed hot Thursday night, using a big first inning to beat the Scott County All-Stars 7-6 and advance to the championship game of the Babe Ruth District All-Star tournament on Saturday.
Frankfort took advantage of a rough first inning for Scott County, which committed seven errors and surrendered four walks.
Tanner Roberts, Jordan Taylor, JP Roberts, Trey Badgett and Zach Mason all scored on a combination of walks, errors and passed balls to give Frankfort an early 5-0 lead.
But Scott County responded in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a sacrifice fly from Thomas Daniel that scored A.J. Gillette, who’d reached on a walk.
Luke Lemons, who’d hit a double earlier in the inning, scored next on an errant pick-off throw from Wiard to second base, cutting Frankfort’s lead to 5-2.
Frankfort’s Tanner Roberts reached on single in the top of the second inning and later scored on a passed ball.
Badgett also chipped in with a double that brought in Taylor, who’d reached on a walk, to push Frankfort’s lead to 7-2.
Scott County cut into the lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning when a wild throw to first base allowed Zach Knight to come home, making the score 7-3.
J.B. Pitts hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning that scored Scott Daniel and brought Scott County to within three runs.
Scott County mounted one final rally in the bottom of the seventh inning that started when Daniel grounded out but scored Pitts, who’d reached on a single, slashing Frankfort’s lead to 7-5.
Reed Carter would score next off a bad flip between the second basemen and shortstop followed by an errant throw and push the score to 7-6.
But Gillette would strike out in the next at-bat, squashing Scott County’s rally and giving Frankfort the victory.
Also getting hits for Scott County was Daniel.
Frankfort plays the winner of Scott County and Shelby County 10 a.m. Saturday for the chance to advance to the state All-Star tournament in Lexington.
