Brad Faulkner received some big news before the final round of the Daniel Boone Invitational and promptly took a double bogey on the first hole.

It was even par golf after that, though, as Faulkner cruised to a seven-stroke victory Sunday at the Frankfort Country Club.
Faulkner shot a six-under par 138 (64-74) to win the tournament with Ches Musselman finishing second at 145 (73-72).

Because six groups didn’t finish Saturday’s round due to rain, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes with play Friday and Sunday.

Between the two rounds Faulkner’s wife Jessica told him they’re expecting their second child. Their daughter Savannah is two years old.

“I started out bad today. On the first hole I had a double bogey, probably because Jessica told me she was pregnant,” Faulkner said with a laugh, “but the rest was even par.”

That was more than enough for the win. Faulkner held a seven-stroke lead after Friday’s round when he shot a tournament course record of 64.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said about Sunday’s round. “It wasn’t as stressful as a regular tournament. Unfortunately rain washed out the round yesterday, but I was excited about playing with Rick Harp. It’s always a lot of fun to play with him.

“A couple of times I’ve had leads like that and lost them,” Faulkner added, “so I was trying not to lose focus today. I had two bogeys and two birdies (after the double bogey), and I was trying not to hit any big numbers. Rick was very encouraging and a lot of fun to play with. He’s a class act for sure.”

Harp finished third with a 147 (72-75), and Brian James took fourth at 148 (71-77).

Faulkner’s 64 was his best tournament round at FCC. He once shot a 66 in the club championship and has shot 64 before but not in tournament play.

“I missed four putts inside six feet,” he said about Friday’s round, “and I had a bogey on the last hole, which was No. 9 for me. I really thought I was going to shoot better than that. I had a good shot into 9, but it went over the green and I didn’t get up and down.”

This is the third tournament of the summer for Faulkner, who finished fifth in the State Amateur.

He came into the Boone having shot a good round Thursday in Louisville, where he lives.

“I shot a 67 at Oxmoor,” he said. “I thought I might play well because of how much I love this course, and I had Jessica walking with me.

“The people here are so nice,” Faulkner added. “Once we made the turn at 10 I could feel everyone rooting for us. I played in the last group at the State Am and there were only three people watching.

“The support is really something,” he said. “I love the Kells (his in-laws), my wife, and I love Savannah. Golf is secondary for sure.”
