John Forbes, president of the embattled Franklin County Humane Society’s board of directors, has resigned. Forbes spoke to board members Tuesday night and sent an official letter of resignation Wednesday morning, according to board member Matthew Kleinert. “I would like to thank Mr. Forbes for his service to the Franklin County Humane Society,” Kleinert said. “Although I have only known him for a short time, I found him to be an honest man whose concern was for the welfare of the animals in our community. I do not feel it is my place to comment on the reasoning behind Mr. Forbes’ decision to step down.” Concern over the nonprofit animal shelter’s operations came to a head after Copper, a Shiba Inu, was turned away in early July after she was misidentified as a coyote. Police removed Copper from the shelter, and let her go. She is still missing. Forbes at that time said he supported the action because housing a coyote at the shelter could have caused it to be closed. A number of issues about the management and operation of the shelter have come to light. They’ve been aired at City Commission meetings and with county Judge-Executive Ted Collins, First District Magistrate Jill Robinson and County Attorney Rick Sparks. “I’m not sure why Mr. Forbes defended the shelter manager twice, but I do feel he is a good man who has been caught up in a bad situation,” said Trudi Johnson, who has been representing a group seeking reforms at the shelter. Bill Kirkland, the attorney representing the Humane Society, has termed the matter over Copper a mistake and apologized for it. Forbes’ resignation leaves only five members on the 11-member board. “Through this trying process, I have been amazed and touched at the tremendous level of concern and passion our community has shown for the animals in the society’s care,” Kleinert said in an e-mail to The State Journal. “While I cannot speak for the Franklin County Humane Society Board itself, it is my personal hope that the Board begins the process of filling its current vacancies as soon as possible. “I invite the community, especially those interested in volunteering with the Humane Society and/or seeking membership on the Humane Society Board to attend the open forum at the public library this Saturday, where I hope that we can begin this process.” The forum will be Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at the Paul Sawyier Public Library.
