Western Hills' Emily Florence and Frankfort's Aubrey Persons battle for the ball Wednesday night at Capitol View Park.
Both coaches were looking for signs of improvement.
Both coaches found some.
Western Hills’ girls soccer team defeated Frankfort High 2-1 Wednesday at Sower Soccer Field, the teams’ second meeting in a little over two weeks.
In their first match, WHHS won 3-1.
“We played better than we did last time,” FHS coach Adam Saunderson said. “We were holding them tight at halftime, and they had more opportunities on goal in the first half.
“In the second half we had a lot more shots on goal,” he added. “We got a couple of good opportunities to score and didn’t make them.”
The Lady Wolverines controlled the ball for most of the first half, which ended in a 0-0 tie.
“We’ve been talking about working on our passing game,” WHHS coach Gordon Rahn said, “controlling the ball and making the other team chase us.
“We knew we had a numeric advantage over Frankfort,” he added, “and we were trying to wear them down. I thought we were doing a good job of that until the last minutes, but we’re learning. Creating scoring opportunities is what we’re trying to do.”
WHHS scored the game’s first goal on a shot by Carson Cline off an assist from Meagan Walker with 24:49 left in the game.
About 6½ minutes later a goal by Kolby Richardson gave Western Hills a 2-0 lead.
“Once a goal went in it took us awhile to recover,” Saunderson said. “In fact they got two on us, but once we recovered we did a good job, and we were all on offense.
“It could have gone either way.”
A long shot by FHS’ Hallie Bates found the back of the net to make the score 2-1 with 8:22 remaining.
“We’d talked about coming out and getting up quick,” Rahn said. “We had opportunities (in the first half) that we didn’t take advantage of. When Bates hit that long shot it became anyone’s game.
“Once we got our second goal I thought we relaxed,” he added, “and you have to play the whole game. I told them after the game I can take losing, I can take winning, but the thing I don’t want to see us do is relax and start walking out there.”
That was the only thing that displeased Rahn about his team’s play.
“We played a good, solid game,” he said, “and I thought everyone played well.”
Saunderson was also pleased with the play of his team, which has been hit recently with injuries and illness.
“We moved some people around,” he said when asked about his team’s defense in the second half, “but sometimes we were forced to. We had a lot of injuries and sickness in this game.
“Our seniors really stepped up, “Saunderson said. “Almost half of them are injured or sick, but they played tonight and they really played their hearts out. I’m proud of how they battled, and they really battled. They didn’t get the result they deserved. They probably deserved at least a draw.”
Abby Green, in goal for the Lady Panthers, was peppered with shots for much of the first half but kept WHHS scoreless for the first 40 minutes.
“Abby did a great job in goal,” Saunderson said. “They had a lot of shots in the first half and she stopped everything. She had a great game.”
Katherine Embry was in goal for the Lady Wolverines, who play Marion County tonight at Sower Soccer Field.
Frankfort’s next game is Wednesday against Owen County at Sower Soccer Field.
