The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is joining state and local law enforcement in an effort to reduce impaired driving crashes over the Labor Day weekend. During the 2009 Labor Day holiday weekend, 10 people were killed and over 340 were injured on Kentucky roadways. Six of those deaths involved alcohol. “Saving lives and reducing serious injuries on our highways is one of the highest priorities for this administration,” Transportation Cabinet Secretary Mike Hancock said Thursday. “While we promote safe driving throughout the year, we give special attention to holiday periods because of the increased traffic volume.” Law enforcement officers will be out in force conducting traffic safety checkpoints and saturation patrols to get impaired drivers off the road. The Office of Highway Safety also plans to get the message directly to drivers by placing 25,000 stickers on gas pumps throughout the state. The stickers display the “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” logo along with the “Drive Smart” and “Click It or Ticket” logos. “Crashes are preventable,” Executive Director Chuck Geveden said. “If you’re hosting a party this holiday weekend, remind guests to plan ahead, always offer alcohol-free beverages during the event, and make sure all of your guests leave with a sober driver at the wheel.” The holiday crackdown coincides with the state’s “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” campaign, which began Aug. 20 and ends Sept. 6.
