Local volunteers honored for work Two local volunteers were recently honored for their service to the community. First lady Jane Beshear recognized Jim Garrett and Jana Buxton at a ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion Thursday. Garrett received the Volunteer Coordinator Award. He is the Kentucky Emergency Management Volunteer Program Coordinator and is one of only three full-time volunteer coordinators in the nation. He accumulated more than 3,000 hours of volunteer service in 2010. Buxton was one of two recipients who received the Challenge Award. She has been a volunteer at the Franklin County Women’s Shelter – an emergency and transitional living shelter for homeless women and children in Franklin County. Although she has multiple sclerosis, Buxton had more than 950 volunteer hours in 2010.
