A former Franklin resident, Mrs. Mildred F. Harris, 93, of Frankfort, died Thursday, Oct. 29. She was born Nov. 25, 1915 in Clay, Ky. to Andrew Jackson and Mamie Adams Fortenbery. A 1938 graduate of Western Kentucky State Teachers College (now Western Kentucky University), she taught many subjects but most often English grammar and literature in the public schools of Webster and Simpson counties until her retirement in 1981. During World War II her teaching was interrupted by three years service as a civilian inspector for the U.S. Army in an aircraft factory. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Franklin where she taught Sunday School over 60 years and co-authored a history of the -church. She also served in numerous church groups including two pulpit committees and the state Executive Board of the Women’s Missionary Union. After retiring from teaching, she traveled widely and remained active as a volunteer at the Medical Center of Franklin, and as a member of the Franklin Homemakers Club, the Retired Teachers of Simpson County, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Pascal B. Harris. She is survived by her son, James Russell (Jan) Harris, Frankfort; her granddaughter, Jessica Reed Harris (Greg) Hosfield, Lexington; her sister-in-law, Lynn Fortenbery, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and several nephews and nieces. Services will be Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Franklin. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Rev. J.V. Case of Bowling Green, and Rev. Jerry Gifford and Steve Thurmond, both of Franklin, will officiate. Pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church. A graveside service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin will follow.
