Deacon Joseph John Alessio, husband of Alice M. Alessio, of Frankfort, passed away at his home on Tuesday morning. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the Church of the Good Shepherd - Leestown Road at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Bishop Ronald Gainer will be the Celebrant and Father Charles Howell will be the Homilist. Visitation will be at the church from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Deacon Tom Snyder. Born on September 28, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Raffaela Somma Alessio. Surviving are his wife, Alice M. Walsh Alessio; children Joseph Alessio (Joann), Deidre Alessio-Munitz (Dr. Charles), and John Alessio (Pilar); grandsons Gabriel and Jesse Munitz-Alessio; sister Gloria Enright; brother Raymond Alessio; brothers-in-law Daniel Walsh of Ireland and Michael and Sean Walsh of England; sisters-in-law Kathleen Walsh of Ireland, Mary Binks of Scotland, and Bea McDonagh of England; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Other than his parents, Mr. Alessio was preceded in death by his son, James Gerard Patrick Alessio. Mr. Alessio was a graduate of George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn; a boatswains mate and seamanship instructor in the U.S. Naval Reserves, 3rd Naval District, New York; and a supervisor with New York Telephone Company and South Central Bell. He was past president of Telephone Pioneers of America, Capitol Council, Diaconate Studies Diocese of Covington and Diocese of Lexington, and was ordained Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, Lexington Diocese in 1990. He served as Deacon at Good Shepherd Church in Frankfort from 1990 to 2006, and also served as Scout Master at the Lady of Angels Parish in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society, a lector and cantor at St. Anne’s Parish in Brentwood, NY, and a lector, cantor, member of Knights of Columbus and Deacon at Good Shepherd Parish in Frankfort. Pallbearers will be Toby Cole, Tom Kaldy, Dick Mucci, Ed Rodman, Tony Silvernail, and Don Waldner. Honorary bearers will be Deacons Tom and Fonda Snyder, Kevin O’Neil, Regina Cole, Jean Burgin, Liz and Dave Keeney, John and Eleanor Dade, Fran Rodman, Elizabeth Lutkemeier, Lynne Lee, Sallie and Joe Yagel, Rochelle Silvernail, Emily and Greg Harkenrider, Rose Murphy, Tee and Marian Hayden, Laura Malena, Kitty Haley, Margaret Blackburn, and the Hospice team of Amanda, Jennifer, Natalie, Rick, and Sharon. Joe was blessed with a wonderful voice. He returned this gift to God, proclaiming the Word, chanting and singing God’s praises. His voice was used as the voice-over for a United Way film. Joe was also a noted humorist and storyteller. A special thank you to Dr. Michael Huang, Ky. Clinic South; Dr. Mikel Smith, Gill Heart Institute, U.K. Medical Center; Amie Adams, Gill Heart Institute; and Hospice of the Bluegrass. Also a special thanks to all our dear friends for their prayers, help, kindness, flowers, gifts of food, cards, and calls during Joe’s long and difficult illness. Flowers are welcome while memorials are suggested to the Good Shepherd Building Fund, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Good Shepherd Bereavement Ministry, or Hospice of the Bluegrass. Rogers Funeral Home is in charge.
