Good for the skin

After working for a med spa in Lexington and noticing several customers from Frankfort, Susan Payton decided there was need for a spa locally.
With help of registered nurse Nikki Ohler and under consultation of Lexington plastic surgeon Chris Marek, Payton, a nurse practitioner, opened ReNu MedSpa.
Treatments include Botox, Restylane, microdermabrasion and laser hair removal. "We do treatments that are good for the skin and make a difference," Payton said.
Although ReNu offers some of the same services as plastic surgeons, the spas treatments do not involve surgery. Instead of improving bodies, Payton says she wants to improve the appearance and health of skin.
One of her favorite and most popular treatments is Botox, a chemical injection into the face to reduce wrinkles. "Aging is my specialty," Payton said.
Payton warned against common Botox myths, including that its extremely painful and can freeze the face. "Its nowhere near as aggressive as people think," she said.
Chemical peels are another of Paytons favorites. Not only do they leave skin looking great, she says, but also help teenagers with acne.
One of ReNus newest products is juvaderm, similar to the popular dermal filler Restylane. Both are injected into the lips to rid fine lines and wrinkles, but the goal is to avoid the "celebrity look."
"I call it lip restoration," Payton said. "I dont do big lips."
ReNu also sells Franche makeup developed to conceal plastic surgery scars. Because its made from minerals, Payton says it doesnt clog pores or damage skin.
For clients unsure of what treatment they want, Payton offers free 30-minute consults. She checks for medical conditions before prescribing treatment, and also determines if a skincare product is better than a treatment.
Payton says many of the treatments, like Botox, work best with repeat visits. Men need more Botox than women because their muscles are bigger, Payton said. If you are just looking to try something once, however, Payton stressed that everything is temporary.
Although ReNu started Nov. 1, the grand opening will be Feb. 9 and 10 and will feature prizes every hour. Vendors will be available for one-on-one demonstrations and consults. Anyone who purchases an item will get a free gift.
