The Salvation Army of Frankfort has kicked off its fundraising drive to send underprivileged kids to Camp Paradise Valley near Burkesville, Ky., this summer.
The camp, located on Dale Hollow Lake, offers a wide range of outdoor activities for kids including boating, fishing, hiking, arts and crafts and many others.
Salvation Army Capt. Terrie McKinley said the camp experience is great for the kids.
"It's like a mini vacation," McKinley said. "It's a lot of activities, really fun events that go on all week. A lot of things that they don't really get to do at home."
The Salvation Army wants to raise enough money to send more than 45 kids to the week long camp, which starts June 8 and runs until mid-July, at no cost to the children.
"We want to send as many kids as possible," McKinley said.
The camp costs between $120 and $130 for each child, so the organization will need to raise more than $5,000 to reach its goal, according to McKinley.
"We need all the help we can get," McKinley said.
Local children who would like to attend can pick up an application at the Salvation Army, 517 Greenup Ave. Applicants are required to get a physical. Dr. Robert Blair, 4 Physicians Parkway, will give free examinations on a specific date to children signed up with the Salvation Army, clinic manager Pam Rankins said.
The Salvation Army has started a mailing campaign and donations are already coming in, McKinley said.
