A Gallatin County man was arrested Thursday afternoon after being involved in two separate vehicle crashes in Frankfort.

Mark S. Stevens, 48, of Sparta, was charged with two felony counts of second-degree assault. He was also arrested for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license.

He was taken to the Franklin County Regional Jail.

The first crash - a hit-and-run - occurred at 3:53 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 127 and U.S. 60, according to Frankfort Police Maj. Fred Deaton.

City police officers were responding to that wreck when they were notified of another injury crash at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Devil's Hollow Road.

One person injured in each wreck was taken by Frankfort Fire and EMS to Frankfort Regional Medical Center for treatment. Injured were Elizabeth Byrd, 35, of Frankfort, who was in the crash at U.S. 127 and U.S. 60; and Mark Girkey, 47, of Frankfort.

In the first wreck, "Witnesses indicated that a black pickup truck approached the light, struck a vehicle which was stopped at the traffic signal and pushed it into a third vehicle," Deaton said.

"The driver of the black pickup then backed his truck, pulled around the other two vehicles and fled the scene in a northbound direction.

"A witness followed the perpetrator and reported him traveling ahigh rate of speed to the Devil's Hollow intersection where he allegedly ran the red light and struck a vehicle at that intersection, who was making a left turn into U. S.
127.This vehicle was flipped from the roadway into an adjacent field."
Stevens' vehicle stopped in a ditch, Deaton said.

Battalion Chief Dan Shouse said the injuries were not life-threatening.
