A man accused of injuring two people in two separate accidents has been indicted by the Franklin County grand jury on charges of assault and driving under the influence among other charges.
According to the indictment, Mark Stacy Stevens, 48 of Sparta, was driving his 1998 Chevy pickup on Feb. 26 when he struck a vehicle driven by Elizabeth Byrd at the intersection of U.S. 60 and U.S. 127.
Commonwealth's Attorney Larry Cleveland said Stevens fled the scene and continued driving on the East-West Connector. He allegedly t-boned a 1994 pickup driven by Mark Girkey as it was turning at Devil's Hollow Road, Cleveland said.
Byrd and Girkey suffered serious physical injuries as a result of the accident, Cleveland said.
"They are both still in a great deal of pain and discomfort although this happened a month ago," he said.
Stevens was indicted Wednesday on charges of second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an injury accident, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol (aggravated) and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked license.
Stevens has four previous convictions for DUI offenses from Boone, Carroll and Trimble counties between 1999 and 2005.
Stevens is currently housed at the Franklin County Regional Jail on a $25,000 full cash bond
Other indictments returned by the grand jury include:

>Edward Gravley, 27, 317 Woodland Ave. #7, failure to comply with sex offender registration and first-degree persistent felony offender. He was previously convicted of rape in Gallatin County in 2001 and Owen County in 2006
>John Paul Goettel, 28, 120 Kimberly Drive, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, operating on a suspended or revoked license, no insurance, tampering with physical evidence, possession of marijuana, third-degree possession of a controlled substance and being a persistent felony offender. He was previously convicted of second-degree assault and first-degree possession of a controlled substance in Franklin County in 2003
>David Allen Carlton, 44, Franklin County Regional Jail, giving a peace officer a false name and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun
>Miguel Lopez Velasco, 24, Franklin County Regional Jail, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, no operator's license and failure to maintain insurance
>Dustin Cornwell, 20, Owenton Avenue, possession of drug paraphernalia, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance, promoting contraband and being a persistent felony offender. He was previously convicted of burglary and theft in Montgomery County in 2008
>Jeffrey A. Hall, 19, 627 Blackburn Ave., misuse of electronic information
>Issac L. Boozer, 26, 623 Shelby St., no insurance, failure to produce insurance card, no operators license, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and promoting contraband.
