Wetlands tour today

A guided foray into the world of wetlands called “Upstream-Downstream, Wetlands connect us all” is set for 2 p.m. today at Cove Spring Park Wetlands.  Meet at the Wetlands parking lot (west side of U.S. 127 near Thornhill By-pass). Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended and dress for the weather. Insect spray and sunscreen are also suggested. For more information call 352-1333.

Those who pre-purchased copies of “Portrait of Early Families – Frankfort Area Before 1860” can pick them up at a reception today, 2-4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 416 W. Main St. Those wishing to purchase a copy of the volume are also invited.

Road closures possible this week

Lane closures and delays are possible on Dry Ridge Road between U.S. 421 and O’Nan’s Bend Road and on Hanly Lane between the Woodford County line and Galbraith road because of roadway resurfacing through the end of the week.

County school board to approve budget

Franklin County Board of Education meets at Franklin County High School 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Agenda items include approval of a budget for 2009-2010, meeting with the Franklin County School District Finance Corporation, discussing a tuition increase and reports from FCHS, the Career and Technical and Educational Development centers.

Hudson speaking to Council

Krista Hudson with PUSH will be the speaker at the noon Monday meeting of the Franklin County Community Council at Paul Sawyier Public Library. The meeting is open to the public and those attending are invited to bring a snack lunch.

Retirees to hear program

Blue Grass Chapter of Kentucky Public Retirees meets at Crestwood Baptist Church Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be catered by Miss Ramey’s and costs $7.50. Kay and Ray Hines will provide the program.

Holmes Street Neighbors meeting

Progress on revitalizing the area and the separation of sanitary and storm sewers will be the topics for discussion at the 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting of the Holmes Street Neighbors at Thorn Hill Education Center.

Free dental clinic Wednesday

Dr. Arlene Baluyut and the Designing Smiles dental team will offer a free dental clinic for those in urgent need, including emergency care, extractions and fillings Wednesday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Individuals will be served on a first come first serve basis.

KSP hosts free motorcycle training

Kentucky State Police will host its second annual “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Day” Thursday.

The event includes vendor displays, a news conference, safety seminar and “Cruise for Awareness” ride. KSP and Lexington police will escort the ride with more than 200 motorcycles traveling through Frankfort and around the Capitol building.

All event activities take place at KSP headquarters and begin at noon. The free safety seminar is limited to the first 100 participants at KSP headquarters from 6-9 p.m.

Collins Lane seeking council nominations

Collins Lane Elementary School PTO is seeking parent nominations for two seats on the school’s 2009-10 council.

Any parent or legal guardian of a CLES student may run. Nomination forms are being sent home with students or may be picked up at the school office. 

Nominations must be submitted by 3 p.m. Friday. 

Elections are May 29 from 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. in the school lobby.

Reserve unit reunion set

The FCDC choir will perform at the 11 a.m. service May 24 at the Westview Baptist Church, 1443 Louisville Road.

Microchipping for pets May 30

Commonwealth Credit Union and L.I.F.E. House For Animals are teaming up again to promote microchip identification for cats and dogs.

“Love Your Pet Day” is set for 9 a.m.-noon May 30 at the Commonwealth Credit Union’s Louisville Road Branch.

Between now and May 26, microchips can be purchased at any CCU Frankfort branch.  Dr. Gina Yeargan, Beavin Animal Hospital of Frankfort and Dr. Denis G. King, Frankfort Animal Clinic, P.S.C. will be on hand to perform the microchipping.

Pre-registration through May 26 is $20 per chip. Registration on the day of the event is $30/chip.

Visit any branch to purchase a microchip. Bring completed forms to Love Your Pet Day. All dogs must be on leashes and cats need to be in carriers.

Young Democrats plan picnic

The Franklin County Young Democrats and Sen. Julian Carroll will host a Democrat Family Day and Picnic at the Carroll Farm, 782 South Scruggs Lane from 2-5 p.m. June 7.

Games will be provided on the Elkhorn Creek bank for children. Jeri Katherine Howell will provide music. Family day is open to all area Democrats and food will be provided.

Fire department hosting scramble

The Franklin County Fire Department will be hosting a “Golf Scramble” June 12 at Juniper Hills Golf Course.

Teams of four will play all 18 holes and all proceeds will go to purchasing toys for Franklin County children. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Dance team holding camp

Franklin County High School Flyer Dance Camp for students in kindergarten through eighth grade is set for July 6-9, 8 a.m. to noon each day in the FCHS gym.
