Injuries. Illness. Fall break.
They’ve all played a role in the cross country season, which continued for the local teams Saturday at the 26th annual Capitol View Classic at the State Library and Archives.
Western Hills senior Daniel Thurston had the best finish for the local runners in the varsity races, placing fourth with a time of 17 minutes, 46 seconds on the 5,000-meter course.
WHHS finished 10th in the boys varsity race, three points and one spot behind Franklin County, which was led by senior Jordan Parris’ 16th-place finish in 18:48.
“Daniel’s been slowed by injuries,” WHHS coach Adam Schaffner said. “We’ve had some sickness, and a few others have been hurt.
“I thought we’d be running better at this time of the year,” he added, “but with all the injuries and sickness we’ve had to take some time off from practice, and that’s affected our ability to perform well.”
Franklin County was competing Saturday without senior Robert Sandlin, who was out of town, but this season the Flyers have the largest roster they’ve had since Kelly Lewis has been coaching the team with 17 runners. The Lady Flyers have nine runners out this year.
“This week everyone stepped it up and started practicing harder,” Lewis said. “I think they realize we have a month left before the regional.
“If everyone continues to work hard and practice as hard as they can, push themselves, I think we’ll be OK when the regional comes around,” she added. “We’re in a tough region, and everyone needs to be at their best and healthy for us to qualify for state.”
The Lady Flyers finished seventh in the varsity race with 162 points, led by Jenny Hellmann with a 19th-place finish in 22:42.
Western Hills has three girls out for cross country this year but just one, Kory Bradley, ran Saturday. She was 54th in 27:07.
For the Wolverines, the focus is on getting healthy.
“Considering the circumstances we’re running all right, nothing great,” Schaffner said. “Brandon (Pulliam) turned an ankle yesterday in practice and it bothered him today.
“Grant (Hughes) ran decent today considering on a dry course he ran 10 seconds slower,” he added, “and Zack (Wasson) ran great for us. He was about 20, 25 seconds faster.”
Neither team is running this coming weekend, but on Oct. 24 Western Hills will be at the Woodford County Invitational and Franklin County will be running at St. Henry.
“We have a month to get everyone healthy and injury-free,” Schaffner said. “Hopefully we can turn it around and surprise a few teams at the region, and surprise ourselves.”
Bondurant’s Cory Johnson won the 3,000-meter boys middle school race in 11:09.
