Allegiant Air celebrates its first anniversary Wednesday of non-stop services from Lexington’s Bluegrass Airport to Orlando/Sanford. Thursday is another first for its Tampa Bay flights.
“We are extremely pleased with the reception we have received from the central Kentucky area,” said Sabrina LoPiccolo from Allegiant’s headquarters in Las Vegas.
The promotions manager says the airline is performing above expectations with direct service to the two Florida vacation destinations.
LoPiccolo says the response has been positive to making Lexington a hub for the two flights. “It provided a perfect opportunity for our big jets and low fares.”
Allegiant Air offers inexpensive flights --– more so if a traveler doesn’t have a specific date to travel.
“Like all airlines, we offer our best deals the earlier out a flight is booked,” said LoPiccolo.
A calendar pops up on Allegiant Air’s Web site once a flight destination is established.
LoPiccolo said the calendar features the best prices if selecting a flight only.
A check of the Web site has $29.99 flights to Orlando either on Nov. 12 or 19. Other flights closer to Thanksgiving are more expensive.
Allegiant Air has 44 McDonnell-Douglas MD80s, each with 150 seats. They are one class, with leather seats and a little added leg room.
Another factor in lower price fares is what LoPiccolo calls their “a la carte” pricing.
A carry-on bag is permitted, but checked bags (depending on weight) require a surcharge. Snacks and drinks are also offered for a price.
The airline was chartered in 1997 with Fresno, Calif., as its hub. It focused on small cities close to popular vacation spots. In 2001, it went into bankruptcy. Maurice J. Gallagher Jr. became the chief investor, chairman of the board, corporate CEO in 2004 and moved the company to Las Vegas.
According to LoPiccolo, today Allegiant is considered one of the most profitable airlines flying.
“Many airlines lease their planes. We own our fleet, and it is another way we keep our cost down,” said LoPiccolo, citing maintenance and upkeep a priority for the airline to ensure the safety of its planes.
“We definitely believe safety is paramount,” she said.
