A winning season is still in reach for the Kentucky State football team.
After a loss last week at Fort Valley State dropped K-State’s record to 5-5, the Thorobreds travel to Jackson, Tenn. Saturday to take on conference foe Lane College.
The Dragons enter the game winless at 0-9 and rank last in the SIAC in scoring offense and defense.
A Kentucky State win would give the Thorobreds their first winning season since 2006, no small feat considering KSU was picked to finish last in the SIAC in the preseason.
“Having a winning season period is a motivation for this team,” KSU coach Wayne Dickens said. “After being picked to finish where we were picked, the ability to win a majority of our games is a significant milestone for this program.”
Lane College has given up an average of 35 points a game this season, while allowing teams to rack up nearly 200 yards rushing.
Those marks bode well for the Thorobreds two-man backfield.
Running back Anthony Boykins was the offensive leader last week for K-State, rushing 26 times for 137 yards against Fort Valley State.
His backfield mate Shannon Freison carried the load the game before, totaling 201 rushing yards in a win over Miles College.
Dickens said the Thorobreds can’t expect Lane to roll over for them, however.
“This is the final opportunity for Lane to garner a win this season,” he said. “They will come into this game fired up and well prepared.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
