Church celebrating ‘thankfulness’

Oshana L. Walker, pastor of First Baptist Church, Cincinnati, is the 11 a.m. speaker today at Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church, 127 Greenhill Ave., as the church celebrates thankfulness. A dinner will be served following the service.


David Vance speaking to council

David Vance with Senior Helpers is the speaker at the noon meeting Monday of the Franklin County Community Council at Paul Sawyier Public Library, 319 Wapping St. Attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch.

Fiscal Court to authorize items

The Franklin County Fiscal Court meets in special session 3:30 p.m. Monday in the county judge’s conference room on the third floor of the Courthouse Annex.

Agenda items include possible authorization of selling a lot at Lakeview Park to the Franklin County Emergency Food Pantry and declaring voting machines as surplus.


Board to hear location update

The Franklin County Project Development Board meets 4 p.m. Monday at the courthouse. Agenda items include an update from James Bauman with the Administrative Office of the Courts on a temporary location for the courthouse and comments from Commonwealth’s Attorney Larry Cleveland regarding a connector entrance.


Commission to hear ordinance readings

The City Commission meets 5 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Agenda items include readings on an ordinance concerning abandoned urban property, an ordinance concerning rezoning property at the intersection of Ann and Clinton streets and an ordinance regarding sidewalk construction.


Poverty focus of meeting

 Dr. Ed Ball, former executive director of the Kentucky Academy for School Executives, will speak to the Frankfort Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA Monday at Paul Sawyier Library at 6:30 p.m. 

His topic, “Our Home the Earth: Annihilate or Recreate” will focus on how to alleviate poverty, the role of “petro” dictators, the affluence of America and its impact on the world and the rise of economically emerging countries, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Ball was an educational consultant in southern Africa that included working with the UN’s World Bank and the IMF.

 The Frankfort Chapter UNA is launching its 30th year of providing international education programs to the community. The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 223-0512.


Pantry distributing food

Pleasant Pantry at Camp Pleasant Church was recently granted commodities and food from God’s Pantry and is now able to serve more families primarily in the east and north areas of Franklin County.

Distribution dates for this month are: Tuesday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day at the church, 830 Shadrick Ferry Road.

Families who need food must bring a proof of residence.

The Pleasant Pantry will also have a fundraiser, “A Night of Pleasantries” Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. The fundraiser will feature a love offering of $12.50 for one or $20 per couple for dinner, silent auction and live music.

Thanksgiving service Tuesday

The annual Community Thanksgiving Service is 7 p.m. Tuesday at South Frankfort Presbyterian Church, Third and Steele streets. The speaker is Rev. Robert Earl Houston Sr., senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Clinton Street. The SFPC Choir will provide special music.

The Frankfort-Franklin County Ministerial Association sponsors the service. A love offering will be received for the Resource Office for Social Ministries and a reception will follow the service.


 

Offices closing for Thanksgiving

City of Frankfort offices will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving. There will be no bus service Thursday. On Friday, Frankfort Transit will run on its Saturday schedule.

All offices of the County Clerk, the Franklin County Fiscal, District, Circuit and Family courts will also be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.


Transit sets holiday schedule

Frankfort Transit will be operating on limited service using the Saturday schedule, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. route and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. job access:

>Christmas Eve, Dec. 24

>New Year’s Eve, Jan. 31

Western Hills FFA selling flowers

Western Hills High School’s FFA is now pre-selling poinsettias until Nov. 30. Those ordering poinsettias in advance will be able to pick up their plants Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. beginning Dec. 1.

The poinsettias are 14-16 inches in red, white, pink or marble and cost $8 each or four for $30. A bow/foil costs an additional $2.

Frankfort High poinsettias on sale now

The Frankfort High School senior class is selling poinsettias through Nov. 30. 

Cost is $10. The colors are red, white-star, pink, marble and peppermint. Each plant comes in a foil wrapped 6-inch pot. Delivery is Dec. 10. Call Jennifer at 320-3359 or Cheryl at 695-4560 to place an order.


KSU choir performing next week

The Kentucky State University Concert Choir will perform Christmas concerts at the following locations: Dec. 2, 6:15 p.m., First Christian Church, 316 Ann St.; Dec. 3, 6:30 p.m. Buffalo Trace Distillery, Wilkinson Boulevard.

In today’s Spectrum section this headline says the choir is performing “this week.” The dates are correct but the performances are next week.

The KSU Symphonic Band will join the choir on Dec. 6 for the annual holiday concert, 5 p.m. in Bradford Hall.


Civitan club selling Claxton Fruit Cake

 The Frankfort Civitan Club is selling Claxton Fruit Cake.  

Prices are 1 pound for $3.75, 2 pounds for $7.25, 3 pounds for $10.50 and 5 pounds in a decorative tin for $19.  To purchase fruit cake contact JL Soyars at 223-0633. Profit from the sales supports the club’s local service projects.

Civitan is a worldwide community service organization of men and women in 22 nations on four continents working together in community clubs to help those less fortunate than themselves.


FFA alumni club starting

 The Franklin County High School FFA is starting an FCHS FFA Alumni Club to help support programs associated with FFA.

FFA provides students with rewarding experiences that challenge them, excite them and offer opportunities for development and growth found only through FFA.

Membership is open to anyone who is interested in supporting and promoting agricultural education and the FFA on the local, state and national level. 

The club’s first meeting is 5 p.m. Dec. 3 in the FCHS agriculture room, 509.


High school hosting aid workshop

Franklin County High School is hosting a “Paying for College 101” financial aid workshop Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. in the media center.

Summer Gortney, Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority outreach coordinator, will present the workshop for seniors and their parents.


Early Years collecting gloves, mittens

Early Years Orthodontics is collecting new gloves and mittens for Coats for Kids.

Donations can be dropped off at the practice’s 635 Comanche Trail location. 

Call the office at 227-1931 prior to coming to make sure someone is available to accept the donation. Mittens and gloves will be collected through Dec. 17. 

Those who donate will be eligible to win a new Sonicare toothbrush.
