Western Hills High School senior Barbara Gooding recites “Hate Poem” by Julie Sheehan in the second round of state finals for the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest. Gooding competed against 14 other high school students at the convention center Tuesday, including Frankfort High’s Carly Bolanos. Gooding took first place for the second year in a row and has earned an all expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Finals, April 26 through 27. She will compete for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes. Last year, Gooding earned second place in the national finals, taking home $10,000 in prize money.
