Has anyone noticed lately how many traffic lights are at the intersections here in Frankfort. Can anyone tell me why we need 18 lights at one intersection. With the State budget in the red why would we be spending our taxes on this. Why is it that one traffic light per intersection not enough? You know that these are expensive to obtain and maintain. Not only that they are not set correctly. You have to stop at every intersection in town which in turn wastes more money by having to stop and start so much!

Elephant: Agree with the complaint, but not the solution. While people turning right have a green light, people turning left (as if coming from downtown by the YMCA) also have a green light. It seems the right-turn-only lane has no 'trip' for that signal, so the signal does not 'see' that cars keep coming. I've seen cars backed up almost to Douglas Tires.

Well, that's what I was advised of. Of course, that was quite some time ago. But, there are many lights that hold too long. But, the reason for that is, if you have traffic resulting from four directions, the lights must be green for a sufficient time to allow many cars to drive through. And, it "seems" like it takes forever to get through. On these hot days, I have seen peoples' patience lessen waiting for those lights to change along with some anger.

The light by Capital View Plaza (421) turning right to go over the bridge towards Bald Knob Road really backs up at rush hour. The right lane that goes straight should also serve as a right turning lane also. Every day I see someone who will not wait like the rest of us. They stay in that right lane that goes straight and illegally make a right turn into the left lane going over the bridge, and that really makes those of us who wait, like we are supposed to, really mad since we've been there waiting several clicks of the light before we make our turn. Having two right turning lanes there would really reduce the rush hour backup with very little money to change the sign and paint a straight and right turning lane sign on the road. Just my opinion.

Here's the story about the light. I use to work for the "state" traffic for many years. All the lights in Frankfort but the one at the hospital belong to the state. They are maintained by the state. The city has nothing to do with them and there is no computer in this town controlling any of them. The multiple heads are for visibility. Plus if one goes out there are other still working. The price of the heads themselves are nominal, you probably spend more eating out than what they cost. There used to be people in town who maintained the signal and were here to watch and repair them. Due to reconstruction of departments and cutbacks the repair people now come out of Louisville or are done by contractors. That's why there is such a delay in getting repairs done. Frankforts suffering growing pains as most cities. The main routes handle more traffic than the roads were ever designed for. Yeah it's a pain, but it's the best we're ever going to have here unless they build new roads.

If you've ever noticed, the traffic lights on 127 South and Franklin Square (coming out of JC Penney's), hold extremely long. Also, the lights in front of Days Inn hold for quite some time. Now, by what I understand, there are computers upstairs in the building of City Hall that regulate the traffic signals. They have some of them programmed longer than others. The Planning Commission discussed this a couple of years ago when they were talking about the time that lights held traffic when they had plans to build additional subdivisions. They decided to leave the timing like they are now. I doubt if they ever change them.
