Why bother to recycle?

This morning I put out the trash and my recycle bin, which was full. Now I'm wondering why I even bothered. Trash truck comes by, guys jump off the back, throw trash in the truck and then throw the recycle stuff in there to. What a waste. Do I have to stand out there and make sure they do it correctly?

I have been collecting a lot of recyclables and taking them down to the recycle center myself. Mainly glass and large items, but mine seem to be collected seperately from what I've noticed. By the way....it's nice seeing as many people as I do down at the recycle center. Every time I take stuff over there are at least 2-5 people unloading.

Excuse me frankfortgal85 I called the first time it happened and I've called again. I choose my battles. This isn't necessarily a high priority, just an inconvenience.

Finally, I didn't post it here just to complain. As you can tell more people are now aware of the possible problem in their neighborhood.

Well if you aren't going to say anything to them (I realize that you shouldn't have to tell them how to do their job, but in our society if you don't like something you have to speak up or nothing is going to change) then you should call the city trash & recycling department and tell them about your troubles. It is their job to take care of it. It doesn't do any good to write about it on here.

RE: Kyanna and Stubborn as a mule

You're kidding right? You are scared of the inmates that pick up your trash? I made reference to them being inmates because that means that they weren't throughly trained as someone who was doing that as their regular job would be. I know picking up trash isn't rocket science but you still have to know what to do and what not to do.

frankfortgal85 as I said previously in Post #28, "I'm not and will not be their supervisor. Inmate or not, they are employed by the city to do a job." Fear has nothing to do with it. I've supervised inmates in the past, some very smart guys who made very stupid decisions, as you've said smoking pot, receiving stolen property, flagrant non-support. I made sure that they knew how to do their job properly and they were also told that if they had any questions or concerns all they had to do was ask.

So I see this going back to their supervisor or the one that trained them, in either case that is a city employee. Not me.

Finally, yes I have included notes before also on the trash but never thought I'd have to on recycle items especially to tell whomever not to throw them in the trash.

I know picking up trash isn't rocket science but you still have to know what to do and what not to do. I just leave notes on my trash cans or trash when there may be some confusion, like 'Please take this with you' and it always gets done. The inmates that do community jobs aren't hardened criminals anyway, usually they are people who got busted for low level crimes, like smoking pot or something along those lines.

Once upon a time, I lived in a town where you had to have a specific trash bin and you could chose a large one or a small one based on household usage. Then your monthly garbage fee was based on the size of the container. All trash had to be in this bin. No other trash was picked up.

Unfortunate typo in my earlier post:

"It would have made a lot more sense to charge according to volume, while keeping recycling fee."

Should have read "while keeping recycling FREE."

Well maybe you should go out there one morning and tell them not to pick it up. I think its the inmates that are picking up the trash now."

If you chose to do that keep in mind they'll remember where you live. I'd think twice, frankfortgal85. I live in the county and would rather take it down to Rouse Ave.

I didn't realize it was this complicated for some folks. Wow!"

Boy I could have a field day with that statement and dealing with government employees but I'll won't.

I'll just start taking the recycle items down to Rouse Ave. At least that way I know I've tried to do my part.
