I had sent an email to the SJ requesting they write an article on the upcoming local elections so folks would know what positions were up for election PRIOR to the final one or two days before the filing deadlines. Often, I have heard folks say afterward, IF I KNOWN that office was up for election, I would have filed.... (whether or not they MEANT it may be debatable, but it does make sense.

Currently, about the only articles written about local elections are when someone files for a specific office, but a LOT of folks wait until the last few hours to file to lessen the chance they may have to actually run for the office.

So when I saw the SJ Editorial on Candidates Wanted, obviously, I was interested in what was being written, BUT the copy the "hard copy" I received at home was so blurred, as were a couple of other pages, that I couldn't read ANY of it. So... I THOUGHT I'd read it on the State Journal's electronic copy... WRONG!!!

Now, WHY in world would the SJ lock it's OWN EDITORS' comments???

Guess, I'll find out on January 28th -- the DAY AFTER the filing deadline....

And we wonder why more people don't decide to run for office. According to this article, they aren't taken seriously. This upsets me so much.

By ROGER ALFORD
Associated Press Writer
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Republican Bill Johnson's $250,000 investment in his U.S. Senate campaign didn't earn him a spot in a political forum next week in Frankfort.
The Kentucky Association of Manufacturers invited only the perceived frontrunners to Monday's event at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, excluding Johnson and six other candidates who have filed for the seat now held by Sen. Jim Bunning. Bunning has opted to retire rather than seek a third term.
Ken Carroll, vice president of the manufacturers association, said the decision was made to limit the forum to two Republicans and two Democrats because of time constraints.
"It appears it's more of an opportunity to mingle with those who they think are going to win rather than to have a true exchange of ideas," Johnson said Monday.

Frank Haynes (R) has filed to run against Derrick Graham (D) again.

I'm so happy another long term Frankfort incumbent is getting challenged. With state employees being taken care of so well this century there should be lots to talk about. (thats a joke)

Webby, I do appreciate your kind remarks. I'm using the SJ platform to get people to shake the "sheep going over a cliff" group think and continually voting for incumbents just because they are friends or some other reason.

It's time for politicians to earn our vote instead of expecting our vote. If a Republican can poll (as of today) within 1% of a Democrat in Sen Ted Kennedy's seat in Massachusetts then all incumbents, R's and D's, are vulnerable. Local or national.

The Sheriff campaign has one candidate, Pat Melton, who is running a very well organized and therefore a well funded campaign. They are doing a good job. Granted, as stated before, I'm supporting someone else but I owe no loyalty to anyone because I want the best candidate who will work the hardest for ME, the voter, not some other politician or for their own benefit. The Melton campaign has made me re-think my position in that race.

Other than a few constables that have filed their papers, none of the high profile positions have yet filed. Is Kathy Carter or Rodney Williams running? Is Bill May? What about Ted Collins or Patsy Conway? Why do incumbents, city and county, not file now? Why do they wait until the last hour of the filing deadline. That is quite telling in my mind. I'm smelling fear from the incumbents. Am I wrong?

Please help me in getting other people to run for office. Not only convince them to run, we need to get involved. Help them campaign, donate money to them, so they can run a competitive race. Work for who you believe will do the best job not who you are friends. There's nothing on TV anyway :)

Let's work together to change Frankfort politics

jrb1952, First that definitely was not a tirade. What Magesterial District do you live?

There are a couple of Magistrates that could be knocked off due to inaction and fear of taking a stand. Actually I think all except Jill Robinson could be defeated if a intelligent and organized campaign was run against them. Squire Robinson actually is involved with her District. The only time I see my magistrate is around election time.

Of course we have 2 City Commissioners who I believe can be easily defeated (Carter and Williams) and Bill May could be added to that group. I hope you do run. Good Luck.

Vivian, I am actually fully aware of the positions that are open for election this year as watching the local and state elections is a "past-time" of mine.

I was hoping my comments would generate some interests in the positions, hoping others would realize the need we have for others to get involved, just as you noted. I THOUGHT MAYBE if the SJ actually did a full blown article on all of the positions that are open BEFORE the filing deadline that olks MAY get interested and actually run. If for no other reason... for the $$$ as you noted. But it appears they opted for the Editorial that I mentioned instead.

I am actually THINKING of running for City Commissioner but haven't made a final decision. Since I pay BOTH, City AND County taxes, I have an interest in both legislative bodies.

I found it truly interesting that the City's Finance Director (Dawson) made the comment in tonight's paper that the County should consider raising it's occupational tax to equal the city's. Why can't the city just do like the rest of us and either cut back or use its reserves. I have certainly done that in my household.

Sorry for the lengthy tirade. I share your feelings and hopes. Who knows, I may actually do it!

vivian, I don't know who you are but you are very bright and articulate. Maybe you are not in a position to run for office yourself but I would vote for you based on what I know about you from your postings.
