Aren't parks supposed to be for the public?January 19, 2010
I have recently heard a disturbing rumor about the so-called "public" parks here in Frankfort. I was told (by a very credible source) that the soccer goals at Lakeview Park are being taken down to deter the citizens of Frankfort from playing on them. Well not all citizens, but our Hispanic population, mainly. This is embarrassing to me as a life long Frankfort native. Here we are in 2010 and our Hispanic population is being discriminated against right here in our Capital City. I thought that parks were to remain open to the public, the entire public, year round. I don't see the ramps at the skate park being taken down, nor are the town's baseball and softball diamonds being shut off to the public during the off season. So why are the goals on the soccer fields being removed? I can not see any reason for the goals to be taken away, other than to deter their use. And since the main group of people who do use the soccer facilities are the Hispanic population, this seems to be a blatant act of discrimination on the part of our Parks and Recreation system, against this hardworking group of people. I feel outraged and so should you citizens of Frankfort! If anyone has a legitimate reason for the goals to be removed then please feel free to post, but if not, then I feel that the citizens of Frankfort deserve, at the very least, an explanation. Soccer is the number one sport in the entire world and everyone that enjoys the game should be able to play it freely, especially at a PUBLIC PARK!!! Comments
