Words are powerful and can be painful

I am a longtime State Journal subscriber and have been offended and disappointed by your January 31st Sunday paper headline, "No Home for Gimpy". I was sad for the injured animal and ashamed of the choice of words used in the article. Why would such insensitive language be used in the capital city media? Don't get me wrong, I wished the best for this cute and deserving dog, but I was further disgusted to read the front page headline today, "Gimpy gets a home." The words "gimp" and "gimpy" are derogatory slurs used to refer to people with disabilities. If the dog had been called a different slur against another minority group, would the State Journal have made the same mistake? Words are powerful and this article's title alone reflects and influences attitudes toward the disabled community. This careless choice of the dog's name, Gimpy, will perpetuate negative attitudes and stereotypes in our community.
As a middle school educator, I feel compelled to share with you the same messages I teach to my students. Words can be painful and powerful. The use of words that disrespect minority groups by our local newspaper displays ignorance and hinders the equal treatment of all community members. Please encourage your reporters to review basic journalistic standards on the appropriate language to describe people with disabilities. There are a number of resources available, including the American Press Institute and the National Center of Disability and Journalism. Improving terminology is just the first step in the full acceptance of people with disabilities. I'm hopeful that a brief retraction could offer some correction for the community's enlightenment on why our major local media outlet momentarily slipped to the dark ages on its use of appropriate language.

The language is the same... gimpy, peg-leg, etc. My guess is, the dog doesn't care since, the Dearborn's I think it was, took him home. As for the delicate sensibilities of language usage, some are bad, some classless (my spelling scks), and others, un-called-for... I'm just surprised the SJ didn't have any corrections to print on it the next day.

I do applaud you (for your concern). You sound like a wonderful teacher. Take the paper to class with you, and let the kids discuss it.

As for "use of words that disrespect minority groups"... I regret to inform you, that'll never change. Midgets really are... midgets... did they have a vote somewhere to change their preferred reference to 'little people'? ****, well, that's what they call a cigarette in England. Should the SJ delete my post for using it here? Free press is just that, and should always remain that way. FREE

Focus on your class, which it sounds like you are doing a wonderful job of & I sincerely thank you for it.

Some'll say get over it, I say, move on... but on some level, reading 'gimpy' on the front page of my paper, did seem odd. But incase you haven't noticed (my 30yrs here I have) expecting NY Times/WallStreet Journal Caliber articles and articulation, much less attention to detail in every paper the SJ issues, is like expecting that 1' of snow we were supposed to get last week.

Someone told me once on here, and I haven't commented since b/c I needed to... "Lighten' up Francis"

Oh Kenosis, thanks for the good laugh. I do enjoy me some good sarcasm and calling out people's stupidity. Retarded is my sister's favorite word, makes me laugh.

Oh the politically correct world in which we have to live in! Ya know just last nite while watching the Super Bowl, I had the same thoughts when the the Who broke out in PinBall Wizard. "That deaf, dumb and blind kid, sure plays a mean pin ball" Today's lyrics, That child who has a hearing, sight and speach impairment plays pin ball well. Not the same. GET OVER IT, IT IS A DOG!!!! This politically correct, holier than thou crap drives me insane!

Okay, I am up to speed now. I went back to the actual SJ article and I see that Su signed her name on a post there. I was looking only on this citizen post before. My apologies to Kay Harrod and the SJ for thinking they released a posters name.

I have to agree with webby. The original posting was by damama1046. My reason is that I know someone who has a similar moniker and thought it was unlikely that my friend would be posting something on the SJ site. I believe Ms. Harrod was the first to address damama1046 as Ms. Sheridan in post # 4.

My mistake then but I don't see where Ms Sheridan posted under her name. This is posted by damama1046.
