I live on the Palisades at the KY River and am one of many residents who suffered from the flooding in May. Before the insurance adjusters arrived, or flood insurance could help... or our area was even "declared" a disaster area qualifying us for FEMA assistance, those who were forced from their homes, faced with ruin, had few options.
The initial needs were so great: No electricity for a week, most without water due to damaged well pumps, or for those with working wells, their water was murky, stinky and contaminated. Roads were under water or washed out, and impassable for those without trucks. Debris removal and salvaging what could be saved was frustrated further by more rain and mud. Most had no access to clean clothes or functioning bathrooms and kitchens. Manpower and equipment were in very short supply. In the midst of all this uncertainty and need, there were a couple of unsung heroes that showed up, assessed the dire situation, and spearheaded efforts to help on all fronts. Just a "Thank you" will never be enough, so... BIG TIME, HEART-FELT THANKS to Gatewood Galbraith and Dea Riley for taking the time to Four-wheel down to the problem areas, assess the damage and take personal interest in our plight! They mobilized some incredibly effective assistance for our small community before our county and state emergency responders even had us in their sights. Wow! They have my vote!!
