I'm appalled by the unbridled arrogance of our "Lame Duck Sheriff." As if insulting the intelligence of many Franklin County voters was not enough (by his rude comment that we must have "drank the Kool-Aid" after losing to Pat Melton in a fair competition), Mr. Clark insists on chewing his sour grapes by his off-handed comments and this endorsement. (Some say that it is merely an underhanded tactic to keep an ineffective official in office by being named as Mr. Napier's Chief Deputy.)

Mr. Clark's ad in The State Journal on the Sunday before our May primary said, "If it's not broke, don't fix it." Well, one of Mr. Clark's many mistakes was to eliminate virtually all neighborhood patrols which left our county neighborhoods almost defenseless.

We pay our Sheriff for more than just collecting taxes and serving papers as he stated in the debate. One debate question was about the loss of neighborhood patrols in Ducker's Village. Mr. Clark stated that it was not true, that patrols in the Ducker's Village neighborhood have actually increased since he took office. My wife and I sit stunned, in disbelief, listening to his false answer. When we have called for assistance, we are sometimes told that deputies are not available, to instead call the state police.

Yet another very unwise decision by Mr. Clark was when he dismissed his lead detective from the Sheriff's Office soon after taking over as Sheriff in 2006. Since that dismissal, the local drug trade has accelerated. And who was this experienced and highly effective Detective/Deputy that was busting drug dealers and their side effect burglary rings at an precedented rate? None other than the man that stands in Mr. Clark's way of continuing his ineffective force; Mr. Pat Melton.

Pat Melton takes a very strong stance against the illegal drug trade that is the scourge of our community. Mr. Clark's position was that fighting drugs was too low of a priority considering the department's scarce funding. When (then) Deputy Melton continued to urge Clark to continue investigative efforts to prosecute drug dealers, the Sheriff terminated the best Deputy on his force. Now I ask you, was that a wise move on Mr. Clark's point? I say not. I believe that Steve Clark is a good man, just not an effective sheriff.

In 10 or 15 years Mr. Napier might have enough experience to effectively lead a law enforcement agency, but not now. I hope Mr. Napier continues to gather much needed experience serving our community on the Frankfort Police Department. In 2022 or 2026, he should have the experience he needs to take on the task for which he strives.

Yes, as is Mr. Napier, I am a registered Republican. But in good conscience, I MUST vote for the person that I believe will do the best job. For the benefit of all Franklin County residents, that person will be Sheriff Pat Melton.

Why do people have such hateful feelings about Mr. Clark? He was a good police officer and a good man who helped his community whenever he could. All the bad stuff about him had determined who I will vote for in Nov. Mr. Melton is no better than anyone else who has ran. He hasn't done big things in Versailles, just ask the people there. They are glad he is leaving.

denmdiva621 - Its not arrogance, its the law!

Political signs can only be put up a certain number of days (30 or 60) before an election and must be taken down within 5 or 10 days after the election.

Any political signs that are still in the ground are breaking the county law.

I'll try and find the County ordinance tomorrow and post it. I've read it before.

Personally, I'm wondering about the absolute arrogance of Officer Melton taking down all of his signs before the Nov. election. Does he think it's foregone conclusion?

Sorry about the change in online names but the spouse tried to use my account to put in 2 cents 2. ;) Guess we're gonna both have to have an account if we're gonna both express our opinions.

Anyway...

Ted Collins, Julian Carroll -- he obviously has political influence. The influence of Carroll probably reaches beyond Frankfort.

He somehow gets a job in Versailles. Not local but very close to home. It's not only just a street job but a job where he gets a considerable amount of publicity as the spokesperson. What made him qualified to step into that job as spokesperson? What happened to the spokesperson before him? That job can't hurt anything. It is obviously very flexible judging by the amount of time he is able to spend campaigning. How can he have that much leave available in the short amount of time he's been there? He is not confined by the restrictions of having a local job. In other words, even though Napier's employer appears to be cooperative and understanding about his career aspirations, he would probably be called on the carpet were he to campaign on city time, in their uniform, in their cruiser, with their dog, etc. Melton has been known to campaign in the Versailles uniform, in the Versailles cruiser, etc. Who knows when he is on the clock or off. Either way, even if he's off and even forget the uniform. What about the fuel, wear, and tear on the Versailles cruiser. He even used a vintage police car in the Frankfort Christmas parade. Does that belong to Versailles or is it privately owned? The taxpayers of Versailles are obviously footing some of these expenses. Is he going to be that frivilous with our tax dollars? Is he not benefiting?

I'm trying too.

I can answer that "good ole boy" question with 4 words: Ted Collins, Jullian Carroll.

Carrying forth on My2cents call for civil debate, I'll ask Underdog to tell us how Melton is part of the "good ole boy" network?

I don't see leaving a police job in Franklin County to take one in Versailles as a good ole boy benefit. If he left and had political influence and got one of those high paying do nothing non merit jobs Beshear hands out, then I would agree.

Please define your broad brush statement and lets friendly and civilly discuss this as My2cents suggests.

Melton is just part of the good ole boy network and will win the race. Get over it.

Vivian,

Wow! I have to admit you did your research and I do have a leak in my bubble. While you did the numbers, my point was more directed to the severity of the content in the negative posts. (I have been especially shocked by the ones of late referring to Sheriff Clark.) I guess in order to prove my point, I'd have to re-read every post in every thread, sort them by candidate, into positive and negative, and then take the negatives and sort them even further according to severity. I'm definitely not up to that today. However, just looking at the numbers was eye-opening. Melton has took his share of disparging remarks. Truce?

It is a shame there is nowhere to civilly debate our concerns regarding "issues, experience, qualifications, etc. (and even the "character" Sheriff Clark spoke of) without the blatant unhelpful insults that breed more of the same. Any ideas?

P.S. I may get real energetic sometime and do the research but I don't know that I'd get finished in time for the election. ;)

My2cents,
I put my research hat on as I do from time to time and went to Topix.

I did 4 individual searches on:
Pat
Melton
Steve
Clark

I must burst your bubble. There are vast differences on Topix (topics) with posts concerning Clark and Melton.

There are 11 topics about Melton
There are 6 Topics about Clark (3 started after the election)

There are 591 posts within Meltons 11 topics
There are 180 posts within Clarks 6 topics

So I can't agree that "almost every negative thread" came from Meltons supporters. I'll list each of the topics for Clark and Melton: (numbers at end of titles are total posts)

Steve Clark-
1: Steve Clark - It's time to let it go (title of this thread so very new) - 8
2: SJ hates Steve Clark - 6
3: Incumbent Steve Clark endorses Derrick Napier for Sheriff - 15
4: Why is Steve Clark such a sore loser - 26
5: Clark's challengers think they can do a better as sheriff - 14
6: Will Steve Clark run again for Sheriff - 111
Total - 180

Pat Melton-
1: If Pat Melton becomes Sheriff, will he fire everyone - 42
2: Pat Melton wins Sheriff's race - 65
3: Collins and Melton - 11
4: pat melton fb page - 18
5: Will Pat Melton be Franklin Counties next Sheriff - 208
6: Carroll for Melton - 28
7: pat melt - 1
8: Pat's Police Car - 58
9: Why did Pat leave Frankfort - 29
10: Get em Pat, Catch the Convict - 94
11: Dope dealers beware - 37
Total - 591

Three of Clarks 6 Topics were started after the election so he only had three threads directed at him during the election. Melton had 10 directed at him prior to election day. So you decide, who has been disparaged the most. Just looking at the numbers, it looks like Melton was by far bashed the most with more than a 3-1 ratio.
