Joann Yancey Waits, age 92, longtime resident of Frankfort, KY, died June 18, 2012, at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville, KY. Born May 9, 1920, in Winchester, KY, Joann was the only child of Josephine and Frederick Yancey. She is preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Oakley Smith Waits (December 9, 1997) and survived by her only son, Frederick Yancey “Fred” Waits (Cathy). She is also survived by three grandchildren, Melissa Waits Willen (Mike); Charles F. “Chad” Waits, and Emily Ann Waits. She was the proud great-grandmother of Christopher Patrick Willen.
Joann was a member of the Frankfort, KY, Church of the Ascension – Episcopal. A graduate of the 1938 class of Frankfort High School, Joann went on to work for the Kentucky Department of Transportation and retired after more than 35 years of service.
Always active, Joann was an avid golfer and was a founding member of the Frankfort Juniper Hills Ladies Golf Association. She was happiest on the golf course and was very competitive into her late 80’s.She also enjoyed fishing and camping and was a member of the Boone Campers Association.
Joann will be remembered for her long volunteer service as the Girl Scout Leader for Troop #45. She was a strong and able mentor to young women in pursuit of leadership skills and self-reliance.

Rogers Funeral Home, Frankfort, KY, is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20, 2012, from 4- 8 p.m. A graveside service at the Frankfort Cemetery will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at 11.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Masonic Home in Shelbyville, KY, for their outstanding and dedicated care provided to Joann in these last few years. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
