Lester M. “Jack” Ballard, 93, passed peacefully at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington on Monday, July 23, 2012. He was born March 27, 1919 in Stamping Ground in Scott County. He was an electrical engineer with Westinghouse and Bechtel Corporation, from which he retired. Mr. Ballard was an Army Veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a longtime member of the Lafayette Christian Church in Lexington, a member of the Lexington Athletic Club and the lead singer of the Troubadours Band out of Frankfort. He enjoyed big band and classical musical and was an avid sports fan. He was a graduate of Frankfort High School, and the University of Kentucky College of Engineering. Mr. Ballard was known for his gracious manner and was a true southern gentleman.
He was the son of the late Clarence and Ottie Bourne Ballard. Family survivors include Nancy Hemenway, Nicholasville, Ky.; Patricia Hart (Roger) Cole, Lakeside Park, Ky.; and stepson, Daniel Holman, Berry, Ky. He was preceded in death by wives, Marjorie G. Ballard and Martha Holman Ballard. Mr. Ballard’s family would also like to extend special thanks to physician and friend, Dr. Michael Carr, and faithful caregiver, Betty Adams.
Services for Mr. Ballard will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home, 1725 Louisville Road, Frankfort, Ky. Services will be preceded by visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pastor Tammie Lanham will officiate. Burial will follow in Frankfort Cemetery where VFW Post 4075 will perform military honors.
