ELSMERE – Martha Jane McKinley, 66, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at a nursing facility in Shelbyville, KY. She was born on August 10, 1946, in Covington, KY, to Billy Bob and Daisy, and she lived her entire life in Elsmere.
She graduated from Lloyd High School in 1964 and from Campbellsville University in 1968 with a major in English. After teaching briefly, she began her career at the Kenton County Library, where she worked as a circulation clerk at the Erlanger branch from 1980 until she retired in 2004. She was known and loved by hundreds of library patrons and children for her loving and helpful spirit and her gracious personality. During her years at the library one patron gave a gift of $250,000 to the library specifically naming Martha in her donation as one of those who had been so kind and helpful to her over all her years of going to the library.
Over the years Martha was devoted to a ministry of crocheting afghans that were donated to the New Life Center for crisis pregnancies. She also gave many afghans to the Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth East where she was treated for cancer in recent years.
Martha was a life-long member of Elsmere Baptist Church where she was very active in many areas of the church ministry. She taught a women’s Bible class for many years and was very involved in the music ministry of the church. She sang in the church choir and was a frequent soloist. She also served when needed as the congregational song leader and choir director.
She is survived by her brothers, Bill (Theresa) and Doug (Linda) McKinley, some very special cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation at Elsmere Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 4 from 4 pm until 7 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be held at the church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September, followed by interment next to her parents at Forest Lawn in Erlanger.
Expressions of sympathy can be made to honor her to Elsmere Baptist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home.
