Florence Anne Fort Welch Stevenson, 98, died Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Tanbark Health Care Center in Lexington, KY. She was born June 20, 1914 in Washington, D.C. to Dr. Robert Marion and Florence Clos (Irmen) Fort, of Frankfort.
A 1938 graduate of the University of Kentucky and longtime Frankfort resident, Florence Anne spent much of her life as a devoted homemaker and widowed mother of two boys, later serving her community including as Executive Director of the Franklin County Chapter of the American Red Cross, followed by years as Secretary and other countless roles at the Church of the Ascension in Frankfort, from where she retired in 1990.
Florence Anne was known as a very strong, loving, kind and faithful woman who touched the lives of many in a most unselfish and graceful way. She enjoyed living a very active life. She was a lifetime member of the UK Alumni Assoc., a Kentucky Colonel, served and volunteered for countless organizations such as the Murray Street PTA, Cub Scouts, Frankfort Homemakers and Garden Club, Daughters of the King (Episcopal) and of course her beloved church. In her pastime she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, playing bridge, traveling the world with the Capitol First Ladies and was absolutely wild about her Wildcats since the days of Rupp; she held men’s basketball and football season tickets for many decades.
She is survived by a son, Robert Earl (Sara) Welch of Middletown, OH, a stepson, John (Beata) Stevenson of CO, five grandchildren, Richard (Abigail) Welch, Sharon (Timothy) Rechel, Leah (Kevin) Roth all of OH, Aaron Jon (Diane) Welch of Lexington, KY, and Andrew Reid (Janet) Shaver II of Ardmore, TN, a step-grandson, Jordan Stevenson of CO and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband in 1947, Earl George Welch Jr., her second husband in 1994, Thomas Soward Stevenson, her youngest son Ronald Fort Welch, and her brother and sister, Robert Irmen and Clara Margret Fort.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22nd at the Church of the Ascension in Frankfort, KY, Fr. William G. Brown officiating. The family will receive friends during visitation from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment at Frankfort Cemetery will be conducted at a later date. Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
