Frances Downs Burch, 89 died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at her home after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). She was a native of Bardstown, Ky. She graduated as an RN from St. Joseph Nursing School and worked as a labor and delivery nurse at St. Joseph and St. Anthony Hospitals. She was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, and a member of the Red Hat Society. She had a love of life and adventure, and was a woman of tremendous faith, courage and strength.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Bernand Sr.; her daughter, Gayle Ballard; and siblings Marithelma Kelly, Jane West, and Ray and Joe Pat Downs.
She is survived by her children Dr. Gene Burch (Mary Ann), Judy Greenwell (Ron), son-in-law Frank Ballard (Peggy), and Bonnie Cress; her siblings Earl, Alfred, and Dennis Downs; grandchildren T.J. Burch (Andrea), Chris Ballard (Monica), Becca Ballard, Scott Greenwell (Tracy), JoAnne Burris (Jace), Megan Phelps (Michael), and Kristin Jackson (Lance); nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Stephen Martyr Church, 2931 Pindell Ave., with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 - 7 p.m. on Sunday at Embry-Bosse Funeral Home, 2723 Preston Highway.
