The Reverend Nancy Barton, D.Min., 79, passed away on January 9, 2013.
Born on July 15, 1933 in Washington, D.C., Nancy was a longtime resident of Frankfort, Kentucky.
She taught at Second Street School for many years and was quite active in local churches.
Nancy earned a B.A. at Niagara University. She taught in Niagara Falls, New York, before accompanying her husband Jim to Kentucky. After settling in Frankfort once he completed his military service, she earned an M.A. in Education at the University of Kentucky.
Responding to the Lord’s call, she became a deacon at the Church of the Ascension. She later attended the Lexington Theological Seminary and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. She had the care of St. Agnes House in Lexington. Nancy became a Doctor of Ministry at the University of the South in Sewanee. She then became rector of St. Mary’s Church in Cadillac, Michigan, where she retired from the Lord’s service. She continued her volunteer work with hospital and humane society.
Nancy is survived by her three children, Garrett (Priscilla), of Colorado Springs, Elizabeth, of Waddy, Kentucky, Andrea (Jon Dunlap), of Bedford, Kentucky, and three grandchildren, William Barton, Meaghan Dunlap Vied, and Savannah Dunlap. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James B. Barton, and by her granddaughter Jessica Dunlap.
Services are to be at the Church of the Ascension, at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013.
