ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Charlotte Holderman Ray Derrough, 88, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully in her home on January 11, 2013, surrounded by her five children, following a brief bout with cancer. Born in the mountain town of Burnsville, N.C., on December 13, 1924, she graduated from Greensboro Women’s College in 1946, moved to Chicago in 1947, and in 1950 married Roger Derrough of Thomasboro, IL. They relocated to Matthews, N.C. in 1953 and to Asheville in 1962.
Known to her loving family and many of her friends by the sobriquet “Big Cake,” Charlotte was revered for her joy, positivity, vibrant spirit, humor, lovely smile, and incomparable, passionate love of God and humanity. A devoted mother and homemaker, she cherished working in her garden and created a warm home that for decades welcomed and entertained diverse guests and family. She worked at Earth Fare, her son’s natural food store, built a solar house, traveled, and worked with the Asheville Symphony, all the while making many great friends.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband Roger. Survivors include five children, Roger Derrough Jr. (Janese) of Asheville, Julia Rome (David) of Frankfort, Carol Neely (Steve) of Rutherfordton, NC, and Patricia Derrough and David Derrough of Asheville; nine grandchildren, including Nathan Rome (Shannan), Rachel Rome (Elijah Israel), Justin Rome, Jeremy Rome, and Isaac Gleason, all of Frankfort, and Carter Neely, formerly of Frankfort; nine great-grandchildren, including Lauren Whiteside, Michal Allen, Gabrielle Israel, Benjamin and Leah Rome, Zoey and Gavin Parker, and Max Gleason, all of Frankfort; and “adopted daughter” Lillian Carvalho of Frankfort.
A memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville on Sunday, January 20 at 2 p.m., with reception immediately following.
