Mildred Stewart, 96, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 17, 2013. She is survived by her son, Robert H. “Bob” Stewart, Frankfort; a sister, Mary Wainscott, Frankfort; a grandson Michael Stewart, Lexington; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Stewart, Sr., sons William G. Stewart, Jr. and Richard W. “Butch” Stewart, and grandson Brian.
She is also survived by her caregivers, Jan Harrod and Donna Blankenship, whose loving care was of immeasurable comfort. The family would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support and care provided through the years by Franklin County Home Health and most recently by Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Mildred was a native of Somerset, Kentucky and a proud graduate of Paris (KY) High School, Class of 1934. She moved to Frankfort in 1937 where she began a career in state government, retiring from the Kentucky Department of Insurance in 1981 where she served as Chief License Clerk for many years. She was highly regarded throughout the insurance industry of Kentucky for her professional knowledge and constant willingness to serve and assist whenever possible those seeking insurance licenses and the public at large. She was an active member of the Insurance Women’s Club of Kentucky.
She considered her highest calling, however, to be a wonderful wife and mother. She was an exemplary working Mom who excelled at her job and yet always found time to support and participate fully in the various school and athletic activities of all three of her sons, while creating a nurturing and welcoming home for her family and their friends.
For those who knew her, she had a well deserved reputation for cooking, with a specialty for holiday candies. Her homemade candy was in high demand and especially delighted the classmates of her three sons, for whom she served as “room mother” for many years, as documented in a State Journal feature in December 2010.
A lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky football and basketball, Mildred was an avid sports fan. Even after multiple sclerosis had confined her to a wheelchair, she enjoyed attending home UK football games as long as she could and rarely, if ever, missed a Wildcat basketball game on television.
