Ramona Ramsey

Ramona “Mona” Jenell Ramsey passed away on Tuesday January 29, 2013. She was born April 17, 1958 to Sy Ramsey and Sylvia Lea Jones Ramsey Avram in Little Rock, Arkansas, where her father’s reporting on Little Rock school integration was published nationally. When her father began work for the Associated Press in 1959, the family moved to Kentucky and settled in Frankfort. Mona graduated from Franklin County High School in 1976.

She worked at the Buckboard Leather Shop and later attended the University of Kentucky and Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ramona’s remarkable spirit was energized throughout her life by several passions: animals, music and the environment, just to name a few. Her love of animals and action for their protection originated in childhood and continued into her final days.

Her appreciation of music and her profound knowledge of favorite artists, bands, and genres generated and sustained lifelong friendships. Mona’s dedication to protection of the earth’s precious resources guided her educational career at Chatham and nurtured her spiritual connection with all creation.

Mona spent the past decade in the loving companionship of Clifford Camden Sr., raising gardens, enjoying rural Franklin County and caring for their cats. Mona was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, David Sy Ramsey. She is survived by her son, Shea Corbett McCombs, Albany, NY; her daughter, Julia Chelsea “Chelly” Johnson, Pittsburgh, PA; and her fiancé, Cliff Camden Sr., who will miss her dearly.

A service in celebration of her life will be held on Friday February 1, 2013 at 3 p.m. at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home in Frankfort, KY, with her burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. Pallbearers for the service will be Scott Armstrong, Clifford Camden Jr., Drex Davis Jr., Martin Milton Jr., John Perkins, and Walter Tunis.

Flowers are welcome, and the family requests any memorial donations made in her honor be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 1041 Kentucky Avenue, Frankfort, KY 40601. A guestbook is available at www.ljtfuneralhome.com.

  • Mona, what a beautiful woman you are. I will always remember you as my first friend in Frankfort in the 5th grade when I moved there. Many times we walked to Blue Bonnet to buy giant sweet tarts. Sleeping outside in the summer and playing with one of your beloved dogs, Schlitz. Then came Ghia and Rachel. And do you remember when we cried when we found the baby squirrel you brought into the house in your aquarium? Remember eating uncooked cake batter? We would listen to the Hair album over and over...and Three Dog Night. I wish it had not been so long before we re-connected. Rest in Peace. I know you are frolicking with all your pets.
