Mary Ellen Wingate Patton, 94, of Clearwater, Florida passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Mease Dunedin Hospital, Dunedin, Florida. Mary was born on January 27, 1919 in Frankfort, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Salen and Lena Herndon Wingate. She worked for W.W. Woolworth in Frankfort prior to moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1947 where she worked for Montgomery Ward and JC Penney for 25 years. Mary moved to Clearwater, Florida in the 1970s and continued her employment with JC Penney until her retirement. Mary was an active member of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Clearwater. She enjoyed attending church and served as a deacon, greeter and volunteer in the Nearly New Store at the church for many years. She looked forward to working at the Nearly New Store and developed many wonerfun friendships there. Mary loved to visit with friends, read, walk with neighbors, travel, play cards, and keep up with news from her family in Kentucky.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Scott Wingate and Ike Wingate. She is survived by brothers, William Wingate and wife Gladys, Salen Wingate and sister-in-law Helen Wingate, all of Frankfort, Ky. Mary is survived by four nephews, Fred Wingate and Thomas Wingate of Frankfort, Ky., David Wingate of Lexington, Ky., and Mark Wingate of Dallas, Texas. Six nieces survive including Vickie Wingate Eckler of Florence, Ky., Mary Scott Wingate Lee of Frankfort, Ky., Jane Ann Wingate Botzman of Somerset, Ky., Nancy Wingate Davenport of Newark, Ohio, Cindy Wingate Arflack of Frankfort, Ky., and Selena Wingate of Roswell, Ga. Many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews survive as well.
Mary is survived by many friends and neighbors in Florida who have loved and supported her for many years. She was blessed to have them as her Florida family.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted on Thursday, March 20, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Central Christian Church in Clearwater, Florida. Reverend Donna Oberkreser and Reverend Andy Laney are in charge of the memorial service.
