Raymond Byrd Hayes Jr., age 93, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services for Mr. Hayes will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2013, at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. Family and friends will be received at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home Monday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.
A native of Kenton County, KY, he was born July 1, 1920, the only child of Raymond B. Hayes Sr. and Bessie Mae Dunham Hayes. He graduated from Holmes High School in 1937, where he met the love of his life, Marjorie, to whom he was married for 64 years until her death in 2008. He was in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving on both fronts. Following the war, Ray used the GI Bill to complete his degree in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati. Upon graduation, he joined the Cincinnati firm of Hixson and Tarter. He eventually went to work for the Commonwealth of Kentucky where he was the Associate Director of the Division of Engineering in the Finance and Administration Cabinet. He was an active lifelong member of the Kentucky Society of the American Institute of Architects, serving as State President in 1971 and President of the East Kentucky Chapter of AIA in 1980. In 1996, Ray was the recipient of the C. Julian Oberwarth Award, the highest award given by the Kentucky Society of Architects, in recognition of his outstanding service to the Kentucky Society of Architects and the profession of architecture in Kentucky. An avid sports fan, Ray also enjoyed extensive travel with his wife, Marge.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his son, Raymond B. “Skip” Hayes III (Susan), and his daughter, Dr. Vicki L. Hayes.
