Gary James Rue, 65 years, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013.
A celebration of life for Mr. Rue will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Phil Hill and Dr. Jack Brewer officiating. Visitation will also be at the church on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
Mr. Rue was born in Fayette County on December 28, 1947, to the late James Price and Bertha Diglaw Rue. He retired in 2008 from a long and distinguished career with Kentucky state government as the Deputy Executive Director of the Office of Application Development in the Commonwealth Office of Technology.
Gary began his career as a computer programmer and database administrator in the Cabinet for Human Resources in the early 1970s. Later, he pioneered the design and development of large-scale computer databases as a branch manager in the Division of Data Management within the Department of Information Systems and the Governor’s Office of Technology. Gary and his staff were responsible for designing and implementing almost all of the large computer databases used by state government from the late 1970s through the early 21st century. Today, many of those databases are still in use delivering government services to citizens throughout Kentucky.
The final years in Gary’s distinguished career were dedicated to directing and overseeing the development of computer applications in the Office of Application Development within the Commonwealth Office of Technology.
Mr. Rue coached youth recreation and select soccer for the Frankfort YMCA for several years. He then became the assistant coach for Western Hills High School in 1985 and stepped into the head coach position where he remained for twenty years. Gary was an avid hiker and a member of both the Lexington and Louisville hiking clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Anderson Rue; son, Jim Rue of Lexington, KY; brother, Kenneth B. Rue (Susan) of Lawrenceburg, KY; a mother-in-law, Susan Anderson of Lexington, KY; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Case of Lawrenceburg, KY, and Melissa Anderson of Lexington, KY; and one brother-in-law, Matthew Anderson (Felisha), CA; He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
