Funeral services for Arnold S. Oaken, 82, Louisville, will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at LeCompte Johnson Taylor Funeral Home. Edward Berry will officiate. Burial will follow at Frankfort Cemetery.
Mr. Oaken died Sunday at Baptist Health, Louisville. A native of Miami, Florida, he was a US Army veteran having served in Korea. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University receiving his Masters in Education and Rank 1. He was a four year member of the WKU Hilltopper football team and 1952 Refrigerator Bowl Championship team. His career as a school administrator took him to schools in Henry, Hopkins, Trigg and Magoffin Counties in Kentucky as well as Murray State University and Tell City, IN.
He retired from education in 1986 and joined Kentucky state government by serving as Executive Director of the Board of Claims and Advocate Compensation for crime victims. He retired from the Justice cabinet in 2002. He was a member of Frankfort Episcopal Church and attended Southeast Christian Church in Louisville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Ray Oaken and parents Louis and Lillian Oaken.
Survivors include his wife Sue McFadden Oaken, Louisville; son, Dean (Teena) Oaken, Waddy; four grandchildren Taylor Oaken, Gracee Oaken, Hailee Rogers and Madee Rogers.
In addition to his grandchildren pallbearers will be Matthew Johnson, Randell Howard and Mark Mangeot. Honorary bearers will be M.A. (Shim) McCombs, Bill Sanders, Charlie Apel and Bob Shea. Visitation will be Wednesday, 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Western Kentucky University, Athletic Fund, 1906 College Heights Blvd., Bowling Green, KY 42101.
