Norma Jean Baldwin of Vallejo, California, beloved mother, passed away on December 21, 2013, surrounded by her family. Born to Elmer and Elizabeth Fibbe on February 3, 1934, in Frankfort, Kentucky, Norma was the second of four children: (presently named, with spouses) Patricia (James) Conway (deceased), Jimmy (Cele) and Tommy (Kay) Fibbe. Norma attended Good Shepherd High School in Frankfort and later obtained her AA degree from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California.
Norma moved from Frankfort to Pittsburg, PA, and then in 1966, she moved with her family to Walnut Creek, California. In the early ’70s, she held numerous jobs to provide for her busy family. From 1978 until her retirement in 1996, Norma worked as a chemist at the Organic Chemistry Department of Del Monte Foods Research Center in Walnut Creek.
As her children grew and left home, Norma sought to continue her career and passion for mentorship. From 2002 until 2013, she worked for the Benicia Unified School District teaching and mentoring children with special needs.
Aside from her involvement in her work and church communities, Norma enjoyed gardening, cooking, travel, board games, arts and crafts, and walking the Benicia State Park trail with her dog Maddy. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and friends and never missed an important event in her children or grandchildren’s lives. We all have many fond memories, which we will enjoy sharing with generations to come.
Norma was well known for opening her heart to anyone and everyone, no matter their walk of life, and taught her family what mattered most. She was a selfless, loving, devoted mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She was most joyful fulfilling all of these roles with boundless love and compassion. Norma has touched many lives, was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Norma was devoted to loving and supporting her seven children, nine grandchildren and great-grandson. Listed with their spouses: Karen, Rick (Anne), Dan (Theresa), Christa, Barbara (Ed) Johnson, Mark (Sally) and Amy (Ed) Penaloza; Benjamin (Paula), Elizabeth (Marc) Fisher, Kathryn, Scott (Gillian) Thomas, Michael Peters, Bryan Penaloza, Kyle, Brady and Cody; Logan Thomas.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Ming Fang for his compassionate care, Pastor Renie of the Community Congregation Church for her spiritual guidance and to all of our extended family, friends and neighbors for their love and support.
A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Community Congregation Church at 1305 West Second St., Benicia, California.
