Gene C. Compton

Services for Gene C. Compton, 82, Frankfort, will be held Saturday 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Phil Hill will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. 

Gene passed away Sunday at The Lantern, Frankfort. A native of Chicago he was the son of the late Ruth K. and Otis W. Compton. Gene served with the Missouri National Guard and spent three years in the Army Medical Corps, including 23 months in Germany from 1951-53, honorably discharged as T-SGT. He was a University of Missouri School of Journalism graduate with a Bachelor of Journalism in 1958. He was a former News Director of WPSD-TV  Paducah, an Area Correspondent for the Joplin Globe, Joplin, MO; newsman for KDMO Radio and TV Carthage, MO, and KFRU Radio in Columbia , MO. 

In 1964 he moved to Frankfort and entered KY State Government. He retired from the Department of Education as the Director of Publications and Dissemination. He also served in broadcasting as moderator for the KET Television “New Shapes; Education” and the radio series, “Education Speaks.” Compton also served as former Director of the audio-visual unit of the Office of Information & Communications under the Department of Public Information and assisted with publications for other State Departments including the Governor’s Office. Gene was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Frankfort, KY.

He is preceded in death by his wife Carol L. Compton and his brother Ernie W. Compton. Survivors include his son, Patrick K. (PK) Compton, Frankfort and cousin, Bill Johnson, Carthage, MO.

Pallbearers will be Gary Grogan, Ron Alvis, Jr. Lewis, Charles Bush, Jr., Bob Bass and Joe Meyer. Honorary pall bearers are Charles Bush and Dale Propes.

Visitation will be held Friday 4-8 p.m. at LeCompte Johnson Taylor Funeral Home and Saturday from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 663 Teton Trail, Frankfort, Ky 40601. Guestbook online @ljtfuneralhome.com.
