Harvey Granderson Gaines Jr., 101, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at home.
Services for Mr. Gaines will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home with Mr. Tony Elam and Mr. Jerry Lester officiating. Music provided by Linda Ritchie, Ruth Blackwell, Steve Dawson, Tony Elam and Jerry Lester. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with scripture and prayer by Rev. Sean Post. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday from 4-8 p.m.
The son of the late Harvey G. Gaines Sr. and Sydney Harrod Gaines, Mr. Gaines was born March 24, 1913, in Franklin County, Kentucky. He retired as Maintenance Supervisor of Franklin County Schools after 14 years of service. After retirement, he spent several years working for Central Schools Office Supply Company; also, was self-employed doing wood working and carpentry
Mr. Gaines was a devoted member of Thornhill Baptist Church, having served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent (17 years), Church Treasurer (23 years) and President of Golden Agers.
Mr. Gaines is survived by his daughters, Linda Gaines Ritchie (Stanley, Sr.) and Wilma Gaines; granddaughter, Meribeth Gaines; grandson, Stan Ritchie Jr.; great grandsons, Tony, Jonathan and Ben Ritchie; sister, Bernice Gaines Moore; also several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 ½ years, Elizabeth Quire Gaines; son-in-law, Bobby Gaines; brothers, Rev. Posey, George and John T. Gaines; and sisters, Mary Gaines Duvall and Lucille Gaines Pulliam.
Pallbearers are Meribeth Gaines, Stan Ritchie Jr., Ben Ritchie, Orville Duvall, Billy Duvall Jr., Vent Foster and Wilbert Perkins. Serving as honorary bearers are Tony Ritchie, Jonathan Ritchie, Gayle Fulkerson, Tommy Duvall, Billy Duvall, Kenny Foster, Royce Pulliam, Jimmie Shelton, William Bellew, Ed Froste, Roger Perkins, George Arnold, Roy Gay, Freeman Sudduth, Bob Shaw, Jimmy Gross, Bennie Maffet, Lewis Jenkins, Randall Gay, William Ballard, Freddie Goins, Stuart Hammond, Joe Buckner and Gippy Graham.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks and appreciation to his “special” caregiver, Brenda Bryant, the Ruth Sunday School Class for the many visits and goodies, and Faye for her entertaining cards and talking animals.
