The Giver

Special to the State Journal Published:

The Frankfort High School Drama Club presents The Giver, by Eric Coble and based on the Newberry Award-winning book by Lois Lowery, March 8-11 in the school auditorium.

The show opens as Jonas and his friends are preparing for their “Ceremony of Twelve.” During this ceremony, when Jonas’s friends are receiving job assignments such as “instructor of sixes” and “assistant recreation director,” Jonas is chosen to be the “receiver of memories.”

He soon meets the Giver who shares with him memories of their community from long ago. It is during these training sessions that Jonas learns about the real joys and sorrows of life. He soon realizes that his community might not be as perfect as he first thought and a chain of events unfolds that will change all of their lives forever.

The Giver is a truly thought provoking show that questions whether a “perfect” utopian world is really possible. It also highlights the rewards and costs of freedom and choice. The show was first commissioned and performed at the Oregon Children’s Theatre in March 2006.

Andrew Tippett directs the show and stage manager Cassie Burke assists him.

The Giver stars Carly Bolanos as the Giver, Stephen Spisak as Jonas, Caitlyn Biggs, Cornelia Burke, Ashley Elswick, Zach Paul, Shannan Slone, Natalie Snyder and Claire Stapleton.

Lighting and sound technicians are Chad Avery and William Nesslerode. FHS Director Emeritus, Karen Hatter, provides props and costuming support.
